Semester 1
In Semester 1 of Portuguese 1, the language and culture was introduced to the students. The year started off with a few quick facts about lusophone countries being taught, resulting in students to create a brochure to a Portuguese speaking country. To initiate students learning the language, the Portuguese alphabet and greetings were taught, along with new vocabulary including the days of the week, time, birthdays, months, foods, classroom objects, colors, courses, and more. Additionally, neuter demonstratives and interrogatives, along with descriptions were taught. Students also learned how to conjugate verbs like ter (to have) and ser (to be).
Semester 2
As skills, language, and culture began becoming familiar with students, more complicated sentences began becoming required in Semester 2. We were taught how to conjugate verbs ending in -ar, -er, and -ir, and how to use them in sentences including the vast vocabulary learned. Plus, we learned how one would tell the time and express where they were going, when they were going, and how they would get there. Verbs such as chegar (to arrive), gostar de (to like), ir (to go), estar (to be), and more were taught, along with their conjugations and how to use them in a sentence. Vocabulary such as places, weather, and conditions were educated. Currently, we are able to write, communicate, and interpret semi-complex sentences in the present progressive, recent past, and immediate future forms.
